Unemployed Chic

October 13, 2016

Hey there, beautiful people. Graduating college means a lot of things. It means that you can forget about homework and term papers (unless you’re writing a blog, then the essays will never end), you’re moving out of your parents’ house (or you’re staying and saving money, I envy you), and it means that suddenly you’ve gained a newfound independence that you’ve always thought you wanted. Here’s one thing I wasn’t looking forward to after graduating: financial independence. I know, I know, that’s supposed to be something that all young adults want, and I plan on working up to being excited about it, I swear, but at the moment the only thing I feel with this independence is how light my wallet feels. My new “adult spending” plan includes fun things like groceries, electricity, a Metro Pass, and not much else. This year in order to keep myself waist-deep in White Girl Wine, I’ve decided to embrace the “Unemployment Chic” look. Here’s five ways to keep yourself looking adorable and have enough money left over to treat yourself to that pumpkin spice latte:

Roommates
-This is my go-to place to shop, mostly because it’s free. My best friend and I swap outfits all the time, and it’s the perfect way to trick yourself into thinking that you’re wearing something new.

Thrift It Up
-Lucky for you, thrift stores are cool once more (thank your local hipsters next time you see them). If there isn’t a store near you, do not fret. I do a lot of my wardrobe rejuvenation at thredUP.com!

Sell, Sell, Sell
-Tired of that old cardigan still hanging in your closet? Odds are someone will love it, so why         not sell it to get something new? If you haven’t worn something in six months, you’re probably over it; get some cash and go buy something you’ll love.

Upcycle
-Here’s your chance to get creative. If you’re crafty (or you’re like me and have crafty friends so I never have to craft), turn something old and bland into something you would die to wear. When people ask where it’s from, you get to look like a chic designer.

Visualize Your Goal

-My new favorite thing is cute money frames. Buy a money frame (I got mine at Nordstrom), some have a
chic inspirational saying or an adorable background. Add change and bills into the frame till it’s full, and when you finish you can buy whatever your heart desires (mine is a bomber jacket fund). This way you can see the progress you’re making.
